Dr. Richard Irwin

Dr. Irwin was recently appointed to his current position after serving as associate dean for University College since 2010. In his previous capacity Dr. Irwin was responsible for reinvigorating a number of prior learning assessment (PLA) functions—most notably the college’s experiential learning credit program. As interim vice provost, one of Dr. Irwin’s major responsibilities is to oversee the Center for Innovative in Teaching and Learning which provides support for faculty and students on experiential and prior learning. In 2011, he was awarded a three-year Access and Diversity Grant from the Tennessee Board of Regents to support the program redesign of the institution’s prior learning assessment program targeting returning adult students. Dr. Irwin was also appointed to represent the University on the Tennessee Higher Education Commission’s Prior Learning Assessment Task Force, a statewide initiative to enhance PLA usage across Tennessee’s higher education systems. He also chaired the university’s Competency-Based Education Task Force.

Tracy Robinson

Tracy currently serves as the academic advisor for University College students in online degree programs and coordinates all prior learning assessment initiatives including portfolio assessments for undergraduate and graduate students. She also directs the Finish Line program which assists students who earned 90 or more credit hours yet left the university before earning their degree. Most recently, she served on a competency-based task force which increased the equivalencies of CLEP and DSST exams by 40% and developed a plan to launch a competency-based degree program in organizational leadership. Tracy was selected as the alumni association’s distinguished advisor in 2010 and has served on the Provost’s Advisory Council on Academic Advising since 2007. She has delivered advising presentations at the National Conference on Students in Transition, annual conference for the American Association for Family and Consumer Sciences, and regional and national conferences of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

Mark Hartell

Mark has over 25 years of project management experience across a diversity of environments from financial services to utility providers, retail environments, and higher education. Originally from the United Kingdom, Mark has been responsible for implementing and enhancing project management standards in a number of organizations. His focus is to blend formal project management methods with soft skills to not only achieve project objectives but also improve the capabilities of the organizations he works with and the people within them. For example, a recent data centre construction and migration project delivered on time and $3 million under budget but also enabled almost $1 million of annual savings whilst improving systems uptime. Mark also worked recently with the University of California at Santa Barbara to prepare the academic library for a $75 million expansion and renovation project.

Richard Bayer

Richard Bayer is Assistant Provost of Enrollment Services and has oversight of Undergraduate Admissions, Office of the University Registrar, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, and the One Stop Student Service Express Center. Mr. Bayer joined UT as Dean of Admissions and Records in 1999 and was named Assistant Provost of Enrollment Services in 2008. While serving as Assistant Provost of Enrollment Services, UT has moved up the rankings in US News and World Report to rank in the nation’s top 50 among all public research universities. Enrollment Services has recently focused its attention on the University’s Top 25 mission of enrolling the best and brightest students and increasing its undergraduate retention and graduation rates. Through Mr. Bayer’s guidance and leadership the University has launched two scholarship programs, The Tennessee Pledge, and the Tennessee Promise for low income and under-represented students. He also chairs the cross-functional undergraduate tactics team that focuses on enrollment and retention issues. More recently Mr. Bayer launched the successful opening of a new One Stop Student Service Express Center designed to help students navigate the enrollment and payment processes at UT.

Sally J. McMillan

Sally J. McMillan leads the team working on the undergraduate priority area of the strategic plan with a focus on enrollment management, retention, and graduation. McMillan also focuses on quality enhancement through her work on policy development, academic program review, and coordination of statewide higher-education priorities. McMillan joined the UTK faculty in 1999 as an assistant professor of advertising and was associate dean of the College of Communication and Information from 2005 until she moved to the Provost’s office in 2010. Prior to UT, McMillan taught at Boston University, the University of Oregon and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Jeffrey J. Papa, Ph.D.

Dr. Jeffrey Papa, president and partner of SimpsonScarborough, has over thirty-four years of experience working with colleges and universities. Jeff spent the first twenty years of his career working in enrollment management and marketing on three college campuses, ranging from a large, public university to small, private colleges. Over the past fourteen years, Jeff has worked with numerous colleges and universities, providing research and consulting services in such areas as brand identification, enrollment management, marketing and communications, alumni relations, institutional advancement, and strategic planning. Dr. Papa is as a frequent presenter at professional national conferences and has served as an adjunct faculty member, teaching market research courses at various graduate schools of education.

Stefanie D. Niles, Ed.D.

Stefanie Niles is in her eighteenth year working in enrollment management, currently serving as the vice president for enrollment and marketing at Hollins University. At Hollins, she has oversight of the offices of admission, financial aid, marketing and the Horizon program, a support program for non-traditional aged college women starting or completing their education. While at Hollins, she has overseen a major research and rebranding process for the institution, including a complete overhaul of the institution’s website, print, and digital materials. She previously worked as the chief enrollment officer for DePauw University and Bryn Athyn College. Stefanie was an active member and leader of the Indiana Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC), serving as the chair of the professional development committee, the program chair and general chair for the association’s annual conference, and as the association’s president in 2008-2009. She has also been a member of a national committee on best practices in college fairs for the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC). Suzanne Mozdy

Suzanne Mozdy has been with the college for eleven years and has taught mathematics for fifteen years. Suzanne believes quite strongly in the open educational resources movement because of its ability to give access to educational resources to underrepresented students. Two years ago, SLCC dedicated a position to researching and implementing open source materials and for the past year, the SLCC Math department has been using open educational materials for instruction in developmental mathematics. SLCC is currently working on OER for statistics and calculus courses.

John Lauer

John has held multiple positions within housing, residential life, dining, and conferences at both public and private higher education institutions over his twenty-five year career. In his role as senior associate dean of students/director of residential life, John oversees multiple areas of the division including residential life, conferences and events, campus safety, counseling, student health, the wellness resource center, and the college’s emergency planning group. John has been active in ACUHO-I, serving in leadership and presenting programs at both the regional and national level. He is also a member of NASPA. Colorado College is one of three institutions currently highlighting student housing projects as part of ACUHO-I’s 21st Century Project.
